Abstract:

Autochrome views of the Santa Barbara garden of Margaret Baylor and of the countryside around Santa Barbara and Ojai. Baylor appears posing in her garden in a few photographs. Another woman who is perhaps Murdoch also appears with Baylor in one image. Also depicted is the Recreation Center founded by Baylor in Santa Barbara; views of an unidentified building, perhaps also in Santa Barbara; and views of an automobile taken at a few backroad locations. Also inlcudes an autochrome viewer, and original boxes from autochrome manufacturer A. Lumière et Ses Fils and viewing screen manufacturer Paget.

Helen Messinger Murdoch was born in Boston, Mass. in 1860. She worked, lectured and exhibited in London, England, where she became a Fellow of the Royal Photographic Society in 1912. She was an accomplished portrait and travel photographer and made extensive use of the autochrome process.
Margaret Baylor was born in Cincinnati, Ohio. She was an active figure in the settlement house movement. In 1914 Baylor founded the Recreation Center in Santa Barbara, Calif.
